Karst Rider to Ha Long Bay - Vietnam Organised Motor Cycle Tours

With packed bags and passport in hand, you leave home to head to Hanoi in Vietnam, the gateway to your adventure.

Welcome to Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, where centuries of history blend seamlessly with the energy of modern-day life. Our adventure begins in the heart of the city’s famous Old Quarter, a fascinating maze of narrow streets, quirky tall buildings, bustling markets, and endless streams of scooters.

This evening, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner where you’ll meet your fellow riders, guides, support crew, and the RAMS Adventures team as we prepare for the incredible journey ahead.

After breakfast, the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Alternatively, join us for a guided tour of Hanoi’s fascinating history and culture.

We’ll visit the remains of the famous B-52 bomber resting in Huu Tiep Lake, explore the Vietnam Military History Museum, and discover the sobering history of the infamous Hoa Lo Prison, better known as the “Hanoi Hilton”. 

Along the way, we’ll stop for some of Hanoi’s finest street food, including the city’s Bun Cha, followed by a traditional Vietnamese egg coffee at the legendary Train Street. After an early dinner, we make our way to Hanoi Railway Station and board the overnight sleeper train bound for Lao Cai, close to the Chinese border.

Settle into your berth and drift off to sleep as the train heads north through the Vietnamese countryside.

Time to get on the bikes and start the adventure. We ride out of Lao Cai and soon turn off on to the mountain trails. Small broken roads and stone paths take us high with our first chance to see the scale of the surrounding landscape.

Lunch at Ta Van, but check out the minority hill tribe people. View the Sa Pa pass, a ribbon of tarmac draped over the mountains with incredible switchbacks and elevation changes and then ride it.

Tonight we stay in Sa Pa Village, a small trading post with many markets and tourist shops to explore.

Leaving the mountain town of Sa Pa behind, we descend on winding roads back to Lao Cai, Vietnam’s bustling border town with China. After a coffee stop overlooking the border crossing, you’ll witness the fascinating daily trade that takes place here, with locals transporting goods across the frontier to supply the vibrant local markets.

The route twists through remote valleys and climbs back into the hills, offering spectacular scenery and an authentic glimpse of rural Vietnamese life.

Later, we’ll cool off with a swim beneath a remote waterfall hidden deep in the mountains, the perfect spot for a refreshing break and, of course, some unforgettable photographs. Tonight we stay in Bac Ha, nestled in the mountains

Today is all about adventure. Expect a thrilling mix of cascading waterfalls, endless switchbacks, dramatic mountain scenery, and the occasional heart-stopping drop-off as we make our way towards Ha Giang, the gateway to Vietnam’s legendary northern mountains.

The riding is as varied as the landscape itself, with smooth winding tarmac giving way to broken roads, remote hill tracks, and sections that will keep even experienced riders fully engaged. Around every corner lies another breathtaking view, making this one of the most memorable riding days of the tour.

Towering limestone peaks cast long shadows across the road as we ride deeper into the spectacular landscapes of northern Vietnam. Following winding valleys and riverside roads, today’s route delivers some of the finest scenery of the entire tour as we make our way to the frontier town of Dong Van.

This marks the beginning of the famous Happiness Road, better known to travellers as the legendary Ha Giang Loop. Built through some of Vietnam’s most challenging terrain, the road snakes through dramatic mountain passes, remote villages, and breathtaking karst landscapes that seem to stretch endlessly towards the horizon.

This evening, we experience one of Vietnam’s favourite social meals: Hot Pot. Gathered around a small cooker in the centre of the table, we’ll cook fresh meats, vegetables, and noodles in a simmering broth while sharing stories from the day’s ride.

As the journey continues, you’ll notice the mountains begin to change shape, with enormous limestone boulders rising from the valleys in striking symmetry as we weave around their bases. It’s a surreal and stunning landscape that feels almost sculpted by nature.

For those with a head for heights, today also includes the famous Sky Road goat track – a narrow, exposed mountain trail offering some of the most dramatic riding of the entire route.

Later, a small off-road trail leads us to the Bamboo Boat crossing, where a local ferries us across the river on a traditional raft-like boat. From here, we continue on into the small market town of Bao Lac, a remote but welcoming stop deep in the northern highlands.

After breakfast it’s straight onto the bikes and into the spectacular Bao Lac Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on all sides. The road winds deeper into the gorge before reaching a dramatic sixteen-turn switchback pass that tests both rider skill and nerve in equal measure.

From here, switchback roads and mountain tracks continue towards Ba Be National Park, a region of lush jungle, lakes, and hidden valleys. This evening, we are joined by local villagers for a traditional dance performance, offering a rare glimpse into local culture. If you’re feeling brave, you may even be invited to join in and take part in the celebration.

A more relaxed start awaits in Ba Be National Park. Today can be a lazy day spent unwinding by the lake, or you can join us for a gentle boat trip to explore the hidden bays, waterfalls, and limestone caves that make this area so special. This also includes a visit to the hidden Hua Ma Cave, a limestone cave that we can take the boat into, home to thousands of insect eating Horseshoe Bats.

Before setting off, enjoy a breakfast of pancakes, fresh fruit, and honey served with views across the tranquil waters of Ba Be Lake, the perfect way to ease into a new day in this peaceful corner of northern Vietnam.

The final day of riding takes us from the tranquillity of Ba Be National Park back towards the energy and chaos of Hanoi. After breakfast, we fire up the bikes for one last time and begin our journey south, leaving behind the limestone peaks, jungle-clad valleys, and mirror-like lakes of the northern highlands.

The route unfolds as a classic transition from remote wilderness to urban life. Quiet mountain roads and sweeping countryside tracks gradually give way to busier provincial routes, passing through small farming villages where daily life continues much as it has for generations. It’s a final chance to soak up the rhythms of rural Vietnam from the saddle.

We leave Hanoi by private bus and travel east towards the world-famous Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam’s most iconic landscapes. On arrival, we board a traditional Vietnamese junk boat and set sail into a seascape of almost 2,000 limestone karsts rising dramatically from emerald-green waters.

Spend the afternoon exploring this breathtaking setting by kayak or simply relax on deck as we cruise through hidden lagoons and towering rock formations. There’s time for a swim in the warm waters before returning to the boat to unwind as the sun sets over the bay.

As evening falls, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner onboard while anchored among the karsts — a peaceful and unforgettable end to the day in one of the natural wonders of the world.

The following morning begins with a leisurely cruise deeper into the bay. There’s the option to visit hidden limestone caves or learn about local pearl farms, or simply stay on deck and soak up the ever-changing scenery as we continue gliding through this extraordinary seascape at a relaxed pace.

For those who are feeling energetic, perhaps take a push bike over one of the islands in the bay, be warned there are a few hills.

After disembarking from our cruise, we return to Hanoi by private bus, travelling back through the Vietnamese countryside as we make our way to the capital for one final evening.

Arriving in Hanoi, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. This is the perfect opportunity for some last-minute shopping in the Old Quarter’s bustling streets, picking up souvenirs, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of the city one last time.

For those who wish to continue the celebration, there is the option of a farewell dinner with the group and crew. It’s a chance to reflect on the journey, share stories from the road, and enjoy one final evening together in Vietnam’s vibrant capital before onward travel the following day.

Hanoi marks the end of an unforgettable journey through northern Vietnam’s most spectacular riding terrain, a final contrast between the peaceful mountains we’ve come from and the vibrant city we return to, carrying memories of an extraordinary adventure on two wheels.
